Day 12 - Why you chose your sorority.

When I went through recruitment, they messed up my nametag. Instead of saying Kyleena, they accidentally typed Kyleena5. Each time we rotated and met a different sorority, I cracked the same joke: “Hi my name is Kyleena, the five is silent.”

The first Chapter I visited thought I was serious, told three of her sisters, and then it hit that awkward point where I couldn’t admit I was joking. The next Chapter I visited laughed awkwardly, but didn’t really appreciate my joke. The third Chapter I visited didn’t get it and asked me to explain.

My last party of the day was Sigma Kappa, and although my sister was already a member I hardly knew anyone. I cracked my joke (because at this point it had become “my thing”), and the girl I was talking to threw her head back and guffawed. I kid you not. Not a cutesy girly laugh, a guffaw. She then dragged me over to another sister and had me repeat my joke, so the other girl could laugh as well. It was official: anyone that appreciates my sense of humor properly (because dammit, I am hilarious) was a friend of mine. And I sure didn’t want to spend the next four years of my life trapped in a sorority that didn’t have a proper sense of humor. I wrote down Sigma Kappa as my number one choice and never looked back.

To be honest, I’m pretty sure my sorority chose me. Going through recruitment is such a whirlwind experience, but the sisters already in Sigma Kappa saw something in me that they felt would add to our Chapter. And after meeting them, it seemed like a place I would be able to grow as a person, and I was right. These past three years have taught me so much about who I am, and I am so grateful I have been able to share it with all my sisters. I love being a Sigma Kappa <3

aldonoho:

*Deep breath.*

You know the feeling when you’re falling head over heels in love with someone?  Everything they do makes you smile, gives you butterflies. You find yourself thinking about them when you aren’t with them, with a big, goofy grin on your face.  You can see a long, fruitful future with them.  You just know.

I just knew.

I met girls with quirky personalities who exuded confidence.  I didn’t want to be them, I wanted to be a part of them, to have whatever bond they had, because it made them so happy and confidence and (in a completely un-superficial way) beautiful

The ritual really helped solidify it for me.  It was sacred, beautiful, and I wanted more.  I felt like I had been brought to that point, and it was time to control my own destiny and pick the sorority at which I felt the most at home… And that was Delta Delta Delta.

BBPB.

bigslilwhitecarnation:

People ask why I am in a sorority and I try to explain all the things a sorority is that they cannot see. A sorority is more than letters on a sweatshirt, I say. More than traditional songs, a gold pin, rituals, and obligation, or a way of life. A sorority is learning about people, a sorority is giving without expecting a return. A sorority is earning respect from others, as well as for yourself.

A sorority will not solve all your problems. But I have made good friends and found confidence there to help me take life one step at a time.

sorority 101:

SORORITY MYTH BUSTING:

Myth #1: Sorority women all look the same.

Fact:  New members soon discover that sisters aren’t plucked from movies and tv shows. Sororities care about the values that their chapters were chartered to uphold, and those values can hardly be exemplified by blond hair, the size of a woman’s waistband, or the designer fashions she wears. In reality, each chapter cherishes qualities they look for in the hearts of others – hence the reason for conversation in recruitment, and the reason why women join different sororities.

Myth #2: By joining a sorority, I’m just buying my friends.

Fact:  Sorority women know the money they pay goes toward benefits for their national chapters, like many other non-affiliated organizations. In this way, sororities are much like corporations. You wouldn’t hesitate to sign up for a lab, knowing you had to pay a lab fee, right? The rewards that stem from paying these dues always come back to the women in that chapter. Dues have nothing to do with buying membership – a sorority picks you for being you.

Myth #3: Sorority girls just want to party. They don’t care about grades or school.

Fact:  All sororities, both to pledge and retain membership, have GPA requirements. Colleges also have GPA requirements. Women that pledge without a grain of care for classes may see themselves leaving school entirely! Sororities are also useful after you graduate as a network for seeking internships and job opportunities.

Myth #4: I’m going to get hazed when I join a sorority.

Fact:  Most states have laws prohibit hazing. You can be protected in all 50 states. Pledging women have rights, such as the right to report any hazing acts imposed on themselves or others. Hazing is never OK. Pick up your university’s Panhellenic rules, or a dictionary, and read up on the definition of “hazing” to be better informed.

Fact:  Sorority life is so much more than what you see in House Bunny and Sorority Row!

sorority 101:

Is Sorority Life Right For Me?

Sorority membership offers so much: leadership, social events, service, friendship, and so much more! It provides a home away from home for many women. It is a place where women grow and mature into people they never thought existed.

Your sisters become your support network and the people you rely on, no matter what time it is. They will help you through the good times and the bad. And, most importantly, you change and grow into a better person because of your sisters. Being in a sorority is a very positive life change that a collegiate woman can make!

So, how do you know if sorority life is a good fit?

  • Do you like to volunteer?
  • Is your academic achievement important to you?
  • Do you like meeting new people?
  • Do you want your time outside the classroom to count as much as your time spent on academics?
  • Do you enjoy athletic events? Not just watching, but participating?
  • Do you enjoy being in front of people, whether it be on a stage or speaking to a group?
  • Do you like to organize, plan and run events?
  • Do you want to be involved in a wide variety of activities?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the sorority life can be the home away from home you want. There are differences between chapters and campuses, but sororities participate in a wide variety of activities; such as, intramural sports, short theater productions, musical performances, organizing philanthropic events, holding leadership positions around campus, challenging each other to excel in the classroom, and so much more!

And, if you hold a leadership position within a chapter, you’re essentially an officer on the board of a small corporation. You will be held responsible for certain activities within the chapter, and will oversee a committee who will aid you along the way. Definitely resume enhancing!
