My 2nd time around Recruitment Story!
I knew I wanted to be in a sorority from the moment I watched Legally Blonde in 5th grade…pretty typical.  But it wasn’t until I walked onto campus my first semester in Fall 2012 that I started to learn all of the greek letters and see first hand what sororities were really like.  It was still something I knew I wanted to do without any hesitation.  My college offers Formal Recruitment every spring, and I signed up the second I could! I had a rough first semester, like many do, that involved a class I struggled in that basically ruined my GPA, and a bad roommate experience.  But I was still all about going through recruitment.
I went into my second semester really hopeful for a lot of changes.  I did everything I was supposed to do - made a name tag, made myself look presentable, and tried to be as confident as I could be.  I still felt a little out of my league - I was surrounded by girls who looked more like the stereotypical sorority girls.  But I put my best foot forward.  I ranked the sororities knowing what I wanted as my first choice, and what I didn’t want at the bottom. The middle was a little confusing.
I came back after open house round to see I got dropped from 10 sororities to just 2! I broke down crying as my Rho Gamma consoled me. It wasn’t necessarily about the 2 specific sororities that called me back, it was that I only got 2 while all the girls around me got full schedules. I continued through sisterhood round, but unfortunately got the call before philanthropy that no PNM wants to get - the call from your Rho Gamma that you are dropped from all of the sororities.  Part of me felt this coming, but it wasn’t until I got the call that everything set in.  I wasn’t joining a sorority that year and I was devastated.
But honestly…it was all for the best.  The year between spring of my freshman year and spring of my sophomore year - I became a completely different person.  I raised my GPA drastically, improved my self confidence, and met a bunch of people who had joined sororities so I was able to make a lot more connections.  I also went to all of the open houses last fall and truly got a feel for every single sorority at my college.  I went into Formal Recruitment this spring with so much knowledge and confidence that I never had before! It was truly amazing.  I also used Sorority Sugar as my all knowing reference - it seriously helped me so much and I love it!  Going through as a sophomore, I could feel the huge difference between this year and last year as a freshman.  I was able to have better conversations in every room and I actually was able to rank the sororities without any stereotypes in my head.
It was not until I got to Philanthropy round, the round I didn’t make it to last year, where I found my place in Delta Gamma.  I nearly cried in their room during Preference Round because I knew it was where I needed to be.  On Bid Day, when I finally got the card that I wanted for SO long, and the card that I worked so hard for - I couldn’t contain my excitement!  It’s been just a month since I’ve accepted my bid, and I would do this all over again a million times if I had to. Delta Gamma was always where I felt the most comfortable.  I know that these girls will never judge me - they will love me whether I’m at my best, or at my worst.  The girls I’ve met are already the most amazing people I’ve ever met and the experiences I’ve had have already changed me for the better.  Delta Gamma has already helped me become the best version of myself- "We do not love Delta Gamma because she is great, Delta Gamma is great because we love her".
This is why I encourage anyone to go through recruitment a second time, or to try as a sophomore - the chances are still in your favor!  I hope that my story can help just one upperclassman that wants to go through recruitment, or maybe a freshman that just had a similar experience.  I am so beyond thrilled that I can now be a success story!
