All PNMs ask "What should i wear for recruitment?" Clothing requirements vary from school to school, so always check with the fashion guidelines provided by your Panhellenic council. There will be a dress code for each day of formal rush. Recruitment starts out casual and gets increasingly dressy as the week goes on.

sorority sugar has created this “RUSHWEAR” style guide for ideas and inspiration (not as a specific shopping page.) Please use these fashions as a template for the kinds of looks both sorority girls and potential new members will be wearing. The order of the rounds may vary at each college, but in general, these are examples of appropriate apparel to wear for a fall formal recruitment!

Most rush weeks start out with a group orientation where all the PNMs will learn about the recruitment process and meet their rho gammas/gamma chis/recruitment counselors. This first meeting requires casual attire. Even though it’s very relaxed, you still want to look nice-casual. No torn shorts or sloppy tee shirts.

Patterned or solid shorts and casual skirts are perfect for orientation:

A relaxed, easy shift dress or casual sundress would also be adorable for orientation:

All casual shorts, skirts and dresses should be worn with flats or sandals. Formal recruitment involves a lot of walking and standing. Save your feet and your sanity by wearing comfortable flats shoes early on. There will be time to wear heels later in the week.

✿ ROUND ONE: ice water teas at every sorority house!

Usually the first round of recruitment is the “sundress round”. Wear an attractive summer dress that feels good, looks good and lets your personality shine. A cute skirt and top is also an option for this happy-casual round. Shoes should be sandals, ballet flats, or low heels.

✿ ROUND TWO: philanthropy day!

Many panhellenics supply a special recruitment tee shirt for PNMs to wear during one day of rush. Often times this is for the philanthropy round where chapters explain about their special charities. wearing a solid-colored pair of shorts will compliment the recruitment tee shirt. Wear sandals, ballet flats, or boat shoes with your shorts and tee shirt.

ROUND THREE: skit day!

For the skit round you will be asked to wear a dressier dress. Sometimes this is described as ‘business attire’. This dress is fancier than a sundress, but not as elegant as a cocktail dress. Think about what you would wear to a luncheon, an interview, or a graduation. For round three you may wear dressier sandals, ballet flats, or heels, but make sure the heels are comfortable and not too high.

✿ ROUND FOUR: preference night!

The dressiest round of recruitment is preference night. Pref calls for a dressy dress that you would wear to a wedding reception, dinner at an upscale restaurant, or a holiday celebration like Easter Sunday. This dress should not be too revealing or too sparkly. Preference is not a night club or a formal dance. Please no plunging necklines, cut-outs, or mini skirts. Nude pumps, strappy high heeled sandals, or other heels may be worn. Avoid wearing solid black or all white dresses, since the sorority members may be dressed in those colors.

✿ BID DAY: meet your new sisterhood!

On most campuses bid day is another casual day. New members are asked to wear shorts and a tank top. The tank top is worn because the new pledges will be given a bid day tee shirt to slip on over the tank. Don’t wear a fluffy blouse or a baggy tee shirt. White, khaki, or solid-colored shorts are best.

"Spring" recruitment which is in the dead of winter, can be a little tricky! The nice dresses stay basically the same. For example, you would still wear a cocktail dress for pref night and an interview/afternoon type dress for the round preceding preference. Worn with a nice coat, or classy cardigan if needed.

The casual earlier rounds call for nice jeans, pants, or dresses/skirts with boots, loafers or flats. For example, a sweater dress with boots would be cute. Or classy (not torn or faded) jeans with boots and a blazer or cardigan. Layering can make casual clothes look dressier but still feel “at ease”.  A signature sweater and pants is appropriate for the early rounds. Add a nice necklace, or strand of pearls, and you have a casual ~ yet little-bit-dressier look.

Adapting rushwear to january:

  • Instead of shorts ~ nice jeans (darker denim looks crisper than faded light blue), colored jeans, khaki, grey, navy, or black pants.
  • Instead of sundresses ~ sweaters, cardigans, blouses, long sleeve shirts, sweater dresses, long sleeve wrap dresses, plaid or patterned skirts. For example, a chevron skirt with a classic cable sweater, tights and ballet flats looks really cute.
  • Shoes instead of sandals ~ comfortable leather boots, loafers, ankle boots and flats. Wear opaque tights with skirts and dresses if it’s chilly.

✿ about the FRILL skirt:

I received a Frill Carolina Bow skirt in the most popular coral color! The first thing that struck me was how soft and silky smooth the cotton fabric is. It’s not just an everyday cotton. Instead, the skirt has a wonderful hand and a slight sheen on the surface. The sateen fabric is not too heavy and not too thin ~ just a perfect medium weight. It has a touch of Spandex added to the high quality cotton for a fabulous feel and fit.

Recruitment wear needs to be beautiful and sturdy. The Frill skirt finds this ideal balance. It is also professionally finished inside and out, with a hidden zipper, solid hemline and classy silk label. All the finishing touches are first class. Best of all Frill skirts are Made in the USA!

Upon seeing the attractive bow skirt in person, I can attest to it being beautifully casual and elegant at the same time. It’s chapter unifying, but still young and fashionable. It will give a polished and ultra classy look to your entire sorority. By pairing the Frill skirts with a white top and different jewelry, sisters can look alike, but still have a touch of individual personality. The skirts are one of the most flexible rushwear options available. They are so upscale, that bridesmaids wear them too. If they are pretty enough for weddings, they are definitely pretty enough for recruitment!

Frill skirts come in several popular styles: Carolina bow, Charlotte without bow, Scallop skirt, Sydney circle skirt, Jessica draped front and the Katlyn wrap skirt. Your choice of color. Group discounts apply to all group orders over 15 pieces!!

✿ FRILL skirt bottom line:

I was very impressed with the quality, design, fabric, color and overall appearance of the adorable Carolina Bow skirt. They ARE 97% cotton, so be prepared for steaming the skirts or using a light iron. But worth it for the pretty fabric… With the detailed Frill sizing chart, group discounts, customizations and donations to philanthropy ~ I can highly recommend charming FRILL chapter wear! Thank you Frill for letting me examine your garment and share my review with sorority sugar followers.

✿ about FRILL’s other rushwear fashions:

Frill Clothing also offers custom recruitment dresses and attractive jewelry. Their dresses are just as gorgeous as their skirts. Check out the dress styles on the Frill website!

✿ about the Revelry dress:

  • The “scarlet” style dress that I received was charming and comfortable. The fabric is the perfect weight, not too flimsy and not too thick. Ideal for summer weather recruitment. the color is rich and vibrant.
  • I especially like the flexibility of the scarlet dress and the ability to wear it 3 different ways (as shown in the picture above). This provides the chapter with several style options.
  • The revelry dress is mainstream enough to be worn for other events outside of rush. It’s a fun game day outfit. It would also be cute as summer wear and even as a swimsuit cover-up.
  • The length is not too short and not too long ~ just right. I can picture it being worn with flats, sandals, pumps or cowboy boots. While the cotton fabric is pretty casual, with the right shoes and accessories, it can be dressed up.
  • Revelry offers several different options for dress personalization. sorority name on the bottom hem is my personal favorite!
  • I think these chapter dresses could even be passed down from member to member a few times to save $. A chapter could alternate the years they wear the dresses to keep it fresh.
✿ sorority sugar bottom line: love the revelry dresses, love the idea of chapter rushwear, love the variety of colors and styles!!!
